We’re going to start having these on a semi-regular basis, usually at aLatte Cafe, Borjo’s, Bean There Cafe, or Fair Grounds. Come to talk story ideas, to complain, or just to jibber-jabber our heads off.

Read the Paper with Us

We're gonna lasso you next, Pilot.

Every day, Monday through Friday, someone on the AltDaily team reads the paper and gives their take on the most important news. We’re really proud of this feature. They’re part summary, part editorial, and all goodness.

Monday: Asha Baisden is a new mother from Virginia Beach. She’s passionate about gardening and local foods, education, and quality of life issues.

Tuesday: BC Wilson lives in the Downtown area with his wife and two lovely children. He’s passionate about cycling, the Chesapeake Bay and all our waterways, and local politics.

Wednesday: jESiO is a former Sony/BMG promoter and a CNU graduate. She’s passionate about music, culture, and everything that makes Norfolk/Virginia Beach as ballin’ as possible.

Thursday: Bob Chorush used to be an editor of Rolling Stone. He’s a cold blooded killer of a writer.

Friday: John McManus, a writing professor at ODU, has won numerous awards for his fiction writing. He often writes about gay rights, transportation, and the follies of our attorney general.

Daily Features

Don’t throw pickles at us (or such) if we miss a day with these, but here are our daily features:

Monday: Groove Advisory: This Week in Local Concerts.

Tuesday: Literary Tuesday. Fiction, poetry, and literary nonfiction of and inspired by Tidewater. Email your work to literary@altdaily.com.

Wednesday: My Favorite Local Band and/or Paul Shugrue’s Out of the Box. Email music@altdaily.com to nominate a band.

Thursday: Reasons to Leave Your House This Weekend. A rundown of the best of what’s happening in the 757 every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Friday: Friday Featured Artist. Email art@altdaily.com to nominate an artist.

And let me take this opportunity to thank you, dear readers, for helping us love where we live more than we ever believed we could.

ABOUT THE WRITER
Jesse is the editor in chief of AltDaily, and he's going to take this bio seriously, but not so seriously that he's going to continue in the third person. I've been involved with a bunch of local projects and civic groups in various roles, including: Hampton Roads, The Canvas; Art | Everywhere, Street Performance in Norfolk; Survive Norfolk; Hampton Roads Pride/Out in the Park; Bike Norfolk; re:Vision Norfolk, and such. I originally came to Norfolk as a Perry Morgan fellow in ODU's creative writing program. Before that I bummed around quite a bit, writing stacks of books that never got published, hitchhiking, couchsurfing, riding the Greyhound up down and back across this country. Some of my favorite jobs and volunteer gigs have included working on organic farms in Ireland; being first mate on an old sail boat in Holland; working at a long-term home for young men in South Africa; being a journalist and high school teacher in New York and California; washing dishes in Yosemite National Park; teaching English in DC and swimming in Florida; and interning at ESPN in Bristol, which was much less cool that you'd want it to be. My career highlights have been having three of my op-eds run in the New York Times, and being the executive producer of a six-part docu-drama on BET. Because school is cool I have three master's degrees (ODU for MFA, NYU for magazine journalism, University of Connecticut for secondary English education). I live in Norfolk because I believe in its potential. Email your ideas or nicely couched criticism to jesse@altdaily.com.
