Concert Review: Black Eyed Peas and Ludacris

“Imma be up in the club, doin’ whatever I like” is not just a lyric from the Black Eyed Peas latest smash single, it also seems to be the theme of their 2010 E.N.D. tour. But no complaints here.

bep1Even sitting high above ground in the Hampton Coliseum, I never felt like I was anywhere other than a dance club. A futuristic, bass-thumping, digital masterpiece of a dance club, that is.

Before the Peas took the stage, Ludacris warmed up the room. With a simple setup–involving just himself, a fellow rapper from his entourage, and a DJ–Luda still took up the whole stage with his swagger. Throwing out his biggest hits like “Money Maker,” “Pimpin All Over the World” and even his famed verse from Usher’s “Yeah,” he gave us a taste of what was to come. Finishing out his set with “Move Bitch,” he made a quick exit, leaving the air thick with vigor and anticipation.

A brief set change later, the lights went down and a semi-disturbing but distractingly cool digital face appeared on the big screens, bellowing in a deep, twisted voice, “Welcome to the E.N.D.” Four neon green laser-pointed spotlights hit the foggy stage as Taboo, apl.de.ap, Fergie, and will.i.am came through the floor of the stage, decked out in costumes that can only be described as The Terminator meets Star Wars meets shiny haute couture.

Opening the show with “Let’s Get It Started,” it was obvious that tonight was gonna be a good night. The foursome then went into a few of their lower key songs, like “Don’t Phunk With My Heart” and “Meet Me Halfway,” and featured background dancers dressed in matching stereo speaker costumes. They immediately claimed the space as their own, and gave a few Hampton Roads shout-outs (including to Joe’s Crab Shack down the street).

Highlights from the show included will.i.am’s short solo act, which came next. He asked the crowd to send text messages to a short code, and as they came in on the big screen he began a seriously impressive freestyle rap, using messages from the crowd as inspiration. (Being a vegan before a pop music enthusiast, I texted in “Boom boom pow, eat your bok choy now, will.i.am! Goveg.com” but alas, it didn’t get featured. Shocking, right? Still, even without my brilliant submission, his freestyle talent had us all floored and was a refreshing surprise.)

bep2Later, Fergie, in her own pop princess league, sang chart favorites “Fergalicious,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Glamorous” for her solo. Rocking sparkly stilettos and a hot silver bodice, she worked the runway of the stage and definitely elicited the loudest squeals from the crowd.

Of course, there were some lulls. Taboo’s solo, for instance, left me scratching my head. For about five minutes, he hovered above the stage on a tricked-out motorcycle and”rode” above the crowd before disappearing into the floor again. A little bizarre. And when will.i.am came out again for a DJ set, his Nirvana, Chili Peppers, and Journey mash-ups seemed like an oddly placed act within the Peas’ set.

The four members reunited toward the end of the show to bust out “My Humps,” “Now Generation,” “Pump It” (which Will said was his favorite BEP hit). The favorite of the night though was their latest single, “Imma Be,” in which they had an impressive choreographed dance and an in-your-face digital show. After playing for a solid two hours, they closed the show with a semi-cheesy but loveable singalong of their early feel good hit “Where Is The Love.” Coming quickly back on for an encore, they left us thrilled with “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling,” which blasted confetti on the audience and had everyone on their feet during the “Here I Go” chorus.

Overall, the Black Eyed Peas had me pumping my fist into the electric air and with a surge of vivacious, funky energy running through my fingertips.

In truth, they are like a more diverse group of the cool kids in high school–you either want to date them or be them, because you know they’re having way more fun than you are. But at least with their E.N.D. tour, you can get a taste.
