'Organic' as defined by the FDA also has a million loopholes in it, particularly if you're looking at meat and eggs. So the word 'organic' does not necessarily hold true. Personally, I feel a lot more trust in my local guy who I can look in the eye and ask about his methods.
Eg: We purchase our beef--what we don't raise ourselves-- from a farmer in NC who raises his steers on pasture and supplements with corn. Oddly, he has a really hard time finding customers for his beef. Ditto our grass fed lambs. We don't raise them in bulk and we sell them on the hoof so our market is limited to people brave enough to enter an abattoir's or to process the animal themselves. Personally, that's what I look for! I like to know where my food comes from.
It would be nice if the produce at the Farm Mkt had something to indicate that it was grown w/o chemicals. I often don't buy produce because I worry about herbicides, pesticides and whatever-icide it is that hardens the skins on potatoes. I don't want to consume that, on any level.
Thanks for spreading the word!
