ECSC: Thursday

And the ECSC started off with a perfect day of surfing.

judgesWaist-high waves, light winds and sunny skies graced the opening heats for the surfers and spectators. Bronzed bodies abounded, with a mellow vibe in the air. Roots reggae music on the loudspeakers kept the beat going, and there was an air of excitement and expectation in the crowd.

The talk amongst the surfers was about the chances for great waves Saturday and Sunday due to swells from Tropical Storm Danny. Right now it looks like the winds will be offshore both days, and the waves should be overhead or better. The contest organizers could not have dreamed up a better scenario. Of course, we must assume that the thing doesn’t come ashore and blow everything away—that would not be fun. I guarantee you that the organizers are keeping a phone line open to the National Weather Service forecast.

girlsOne of the main draws was the Monster Energy Drink tent. Free cans for all! I got a blue one of course, lo-carb must be better for you. Unless that is an oxymoron when dealing with such a stimulant-loaded concoction. Sure was a nice cold drink on a hot summer day. Although if I can’t fall asleep tonight and end up off my game tomorrow, I will be upset.

Today the waves should be picking up with onshore winds to boost even more the surf competition. Which is what the whole thing is about: Big waves and killer runs.

So go check it out and join in the festivities.

Look for more ECSC coverage from Joel Mednick all weekend long.
