We are looking for new writers in 2010.
In AltDailyLand there is no them… just a big old pile of us. We believe that the perfect remedy for just about everything wrong with the world is empathy, and that the best method of injecting empathy is through storytelling. So, like, here we are.
We want AltDaily to be the place where you come not just to dig deeper into what you know, but to learn about what you don’t know. We want to introduce you to your Hampton Roads neighbors. We want AltDaily to feel like home.
You might have noticed our articles have a lot of energy; it’s because our writers care for the sake of caring, not because they’re getting paid to care. Our sad, sad secret is that we don’t pay–one day, we hope, but we’re not quite getting by ourselves yet. So that means to write for AltDaily you must be passionate. You must be writing to support a cause, or to spread a subculture.
What AltDaily writers write aren’t just words. To them, it is, in some way, The Word.
So we ask… What do you care about? Here are some 757 beats we’d like to see covered in 2010.

What else did we miss?
So, what does writing for us mean? We want your thoughts on laws (existing, proposed, and ones that you propose) that affect your subculture. We want you to write profiles/interviews with the stars, business owners, and characters that make up your scene. We want previews and reviews of major events affecting those in your subcultures.
A couple finer details:
- We like our writers to submit every couple weeks, on average.
- Our stories usually range from 500 to 1,500 words.
- We are serious editors and teachers, so even if you don’t think you’re the best writer in the world, we’ll help you get better.
- In general, it’s easy for us to set you up with tickets, interviews, and anything else you need. (Indie press still has some power.)
If you’re interested, email Jesse at jesse@altdaily.com. Talk a little about your connection to your subculture, and send along a few story ideas. We’re not worried about resumes too much; your email will be your writing sample. It will take him a few days to get back to you, so be patient.

sounds promising… I’ll pass the word along.
Any interest in a craft beer snob?
Immy, most certainly! I would love to see that!
Hmmm… then maybe I’ll throw my hat into the ring!
I am the music snob and the feminist. :D
Oh btw, I could probably cover both bases if I could interview Ani Difranco when she comes to town.
What about some sort of technology articles? Now obviously there are a lot of tech websites, but perhaps it could be somehow geared toward Hampton Roads.
Hampton Roads local technology scene is generally DoD based(Go Figure.) I’m sure though, there must be something somewhere. Maybe how to use the web and technology to make your life IN Hampton Roads easier, more community friendly.
@Swift I agree! That would be fun to read.As a huge nerd myself, I would love that info!
We have someone that going to write about Social Networking Online. Different, but in the ballpark.
None of you want/can write about technology for us?
I can write about technology, I just need to figure out WHAT to write about it that pertains to Hampton Roads. I would love to write about technology! I love it (and work in a somewhat tech industry)

That’s a good place to start

Sorry. Wrong link above. Use this one
@swift an interesting and very current technology that should be taken seriously in this parts is sustainability in the military!
The phrase “military sustainability” may strike you as an oxymoron: these guys are known for tanks, not tree-hugging. Over the past decade, though, the US armed forces have recognized the necessity of resource management to military readiness: various branches have tested out renewable energy, and the Army even released a sustainability report in 2007.
On January 12-14, Fort Bragg will get to “brag” by hosting a forum on installation sustainability for 40 representatives of Army bases. Among the topics the forum will cover: plans and integration, infrastructure and utilities, transportation, material lifecycle management, and training lands/land management.
A sustainable Army? The words may still feel strange… what do you think about these efforts?

I’d be willing to offer up DIY bike repair tips, custom stuff, home brew/winemaking readables, etc.
I’m working on my first assignment. Thanks again for the shot.
