It’s May: warmer sunshine, beautiful flowers, Art | Everywhere, and street performing abounds. Yay!
The dance events for this month are amazing; the Virginia Arts Festival performances continue, and there are many exciting classes and workshops. Ready? Here we go.
EVENTS
Friday, May 6th brings the performance of Danza Contemporanea de Cuba.
The company, based in Havana, will be embarking on its first ever tour in the United States. The first stop? The Sandler Center at 8pm Friday night as part of the Virginia Arts Festival. It is so thrilling that Hampton Roads has the honor of welcoming the company to this country; it will be a monumental show.
The Visual Performing Arts Academy at Salem High School will be holding a free Spring Dance Showcase Friday and Saturday, May 6th and 7th at 7pm. This show is a mix of different dance styles (modern, ballet, etc.) and features a piece choreographed by Shannon Kisiel called “There is No Hole; Think of the Whole” which is an environmentally focused piece about trash and its damaging effects.
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will be stopping in Norfolk as part of their North American tour.
Chrysler Hall will be presenting this renowned modern dance company May 13th through May 15th (8pm Friday and Saturday, and 3pm Sunday).
There will be two programs during this run, so it may be a good idea to go twice! Both programs will feature the company’s esteemed piece, Revelations, as this year marks its 50th anniversary. Here is a preview:
The Virginia Arts Festival wraps up its dance series with the contemporary company, Philadanco. The performance will be held at Willet Hall in Portsmouth, Thursday, May 19th at 8pm. PHILADANCO is recognized for its artistic integrity, superbly trained dancers, and electrifying performances.
On Saturday, May 21st, the Southside Stomp will be having their Lindy Hop and Blues Social at the Mambo Room. The event is from 6pm to 12am and includes lessons.
The Governors School for the Arts Dance Department will have their Spring Concert May 19th through May 21st at 8pm at ODU’s University Theatre. This show will feature excerpts from the ballet Raymonda, as well as choreography by Todd Rosenlieb, Kathy Brenner, and Janelle Spruill.
