Through the month of August,
aLatte Cafe on Granby will be showcasing the work of local photographer Burt Crapo.
As good as the photography is, the cause is even better. Half of the net profits will go to ForKids, a non-profit working to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty in Hampton Roads.
From the artist:
“I like to get out to the places that are less traveled. Often this means hiking for a few hours after driving for a few hours to get to a place I hope will have some photographic jewels to capture. This time I stayed fairly close to home (within a few hours drive) hoping to find the things that get my hopes up photographically. I found a few things and have collected some of what I believe are the better ones to share with others.
There are many environmental organizations out there all trying to save the same thing – the environment. The problem is many of their causes, worthy as they are, address issues that we are not directly in contact with or are too far removed from our daily lives to really comprehend what the loss of these environs would really mean to us as a whole.
My intent is to focus on those things right in our own backyard. Most of these images are from local and state parks, a national wild life refuge and some are from my backyard. I am not suggesting my backyard needs saving, but, maybe by getting people to think about their backyard as a place to start respecting and preserving the environment, just maybe, this will spread to being concerned about the local park down the street and then our state and federal parks. Who knows?
I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I enjoyed looking for and capturing them.”
This secluded beach is in Back Bay NWR. It turned out to be a great place to pull the canoe in and have lunch as well as get a few photos like this one.
There are a number of short hiking trails in Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge near Virginia Beach, VA. This rest stop is on the Bay Trail which wanders out onto a peninsula with an overlook of Sand Bay.
This pickerel weed (Pontederia cordata) was growing in Powhatan Creek in Williamsburg upstream in the shallow end of the creek.
