Steam Grate (Public Work), Calgary, Canada

There might be some public safety reason these footprints were welded onto Calgary’s steam grates, but to me it just looks like a wink from the Public Works Department. The city has to cover the steam vents, and I imagine someone asked how much few extra welds would cost. Lesson: Treat every surface as a possible canvas.

I had always figured that the footprints were there so that girls in stiletto heels wouldn’t get stuck or trip while walking on the side walk; but now that I see them eloquently photographed in black and white I suppose they are justifiably public art. Thanks for bringing attention to a subtlety that I take for granted daily!

This actually wasn’t made to be black and white… aside from some sharpening, this is what the camera took. Crazy!
