Friday Featured Artist(s): Stuntkid & Friends

Jason Levesque (Stuntkid), 'Surrogate,' 30 in. x 18 in. limited edition giclee print on heavy watercolor paper. Edition of 20.

Four of the artists included in the show are from the West Coast, the birthplace of lowbrow art, and their work reflects it. Although many artists don’t like to have their work summed up into one “style,” which is understandable, what do you think or hope the response to your show, which is comprised of artists that are all at least affiliated with the Lowbrow movement, will be?

Lowbrow has become a very diluted term. It’s almost one of those “you know it when you see it” things. At least for me. I think you could say all these artists have a “illustrative” quality to their work influenced by the pioneers of lowbrow art. You could say “it’s the sort of work you’d see in Juxtapose, or HiFructose magazine.” You’ll also hear it referred to in terms like “Pop surrealism” and “Underground Contemporary.” Personally I don’t know if I can see the forest for the trees.

As for response? I’d like to see the interest here in Norfolk develop. I’d like to see more shows like this locally and I’d like to see the work sell. The artists I’m bringing to 21st street are all well known emerging artists whose work sells internationally. At this point in their careers the work is still affordable with most pieces under $1000. I feel like this is an opportunity for Norfolk to prove it’s worth as a market for lowbrow artists and I hope to see similar exhibitions attracted to the area. I certainly plan on doing my part.
