Friday Featured Artist: Sam Hundley

You also create Styrofoam block prints, this is similar to the Japanese style of woodblock printing? Describe your process?

For a Halloween project in 2000, I carved a bunch of fake stones out of 3-inch-thick Styrofoam to make a crypt wall. While cleaning up afterward, I noticed that it would be a perfect block printing material – it’s smooth and firm enough, and easy to cut and ink. So, I worked with it almost exclusively for the next 10 years. I use an X-Acto blade to carve it (more like gouging), then print with oil-base inks on Rives BFK paper. It’s a bit crude, which I like, and I can pull 10-20 hand rubbed prints off a block before it wears down.
