As a conceptual artist, you use everyday objects to create your videos, sculptures, and installations. Often this challenges the viewer to perceive the objects differently, and gives the objects a new function. In doing this, what message do you seek to communicate with the viewer?
None of the pieces function in a practical way. A common strategy in my work is to remove the practical function from commonplace objects enabling them to function poetically. With the piece Torch, 2006, for example, the flashlight has had its light bulb removed and replaced with a candle. The candlewick is exactly where the bulb filament was. The flashlight no longer works, but then neither does the candle, which is now behind glass.
