Friday Featured Artist: Martha Vann

'Influences and Inspirations', digital painting

You have a broad range of artistic inspirations from Alphonse Mucha to Frank Frazetta. What and who are some of your other artistic inspirations and how do they affect your artwork?

I have always looked at other artists’ work for inspiration, however I feel like I’ve gained a lot of knowledge from my minor in Art History. My inspirations come from artists as far back as Botticelli, Mamet, Titian, and also current artists like Jason Levesque, Erik Jones, Frank Stockton, and Lois van Baarle. I tend to favor artists that do stylized figurative and narrative work. I love Gil Elvgren’s pin-ups, Milton Glaser is a huge inspiration for illustration and design. I also love Heather Bryant and John Tenniel’s strongly narrative pieces. I feel like all of these artists and others have influenced or inspired my work either in the subject matter or the imagery.
