Friday Featured Artist: Clay McGlamory

You have taught printmaking and design at Old Dominion University, in Norfolk, for over 10 years. Did you always want to teach art or was that something that developed over time?

My desire to teach is something that developed over time and over the years has become equally as important to me as my own studio practice. I started teaching for the Governor’s School for the Arts about 17 years ago, assisted Professor Ken Daley at ODU from time to time and did a good deal of teaching in Graduate school where I was more of an actual instructor than a teaching assistant. I was the instructor in these courses and responsible for planning, teaching and demonstration, as well as grading, which is unusual to many TA positions. I quickly realized that I enjoyed sharing the wealth of information I had been given by various professors and professional artists and was addicted to the extremely high energy associated with teaching in the visual arts due to the constant requirement to produce art. This energy fueled my work ethic in a very positive manner then and still does today. I also never get tired of seeing a student get turned on to a new process that may inform their artistic practice in a relevant manner.
