To Everyone Who Thinks There Is Nobody Interesting/Cool/Engaged in The Seven Cities

That their logo involves a mermaid with a leaf tail whose wine glass looks unstable makes me like Green Drinks even more.
First the blah blah blah:
Green drinks is a regular meet-up of anyone interested in environmental issues, including people who work in green industries and own green businesses. It’s tonight from 5 to 9 at The Boot. Click the link for directions.
Fans of the Green Bay Packers, leprechauns, and landlovers who just came from bumpy boat rides are also encouraged to attend.
Virginia beers are $2 off, including my personal favorite, Legend Brown.
But my point here is, the people that go to this thing tend to be a solid lot. Passionate yet engaged, they are the kind of folks you want to listen to talk, but who also will listen to what you have to say. And, as we all know, those kinds of people are increasingly rare these days.
You should probably go to this. Especially if right now you’re hating everyone in your life.
While perving around the Green Drinks website, I came across all the stories other newspapers have written about the event, which is held all over the country. Maybe it’s just because I’m in the newspaper business, but I got a kick out of some of these. To be fair, it’s kind of a non-story story, and headlines for those can be a trick. Anyway:
With “Grassroots ‘Green’ Gatherings Held,” The Southhampton Press just decided to go with a bunch of G’s, got lazy, and slipped into an H.
Georgia’s The Brunswick News decided to make Green Drinks a person with, “Green Drinks discusses environmental issues.”
The New York Times got all cutey-pie with, “Hi. Buy You a Drink? Save the Planet?” Why is it always about getting laid over at the Times?
And finally, it seems as though a headline writer over at The Fredericksburg Free Lance Star might have a stuttering problem with this one: “GROUP GABS–OVER DRINKS–ABOUT GREEN IDEAS.”
Shame.
See you there.
ABOUT THE WRITER
Jesse is the editor in chief of AltDaily, and he's going to take this bio seriously, but not so seriously that he's going to continue in the third person. I've been involved with a bunch of local projects and civic groups in various roles, including: Hampton Roads, The Canvas; Art | Everywhere, Street Performance in Norfolk; Survive Norfolk; Hampton Roads Pride/Out in the Park; Bike Norfolk; re:Vision Norfolk, and such.
I originally came to Norfolk as a Perry Morgan fellow in ODU's creative writing program. Before that I bummed around quite a bit, writing stacks of books that never got published, hitchhiking, couchsurfing, riding the Greyhound up down and back across this country. Some of my favorite jobs and volunteer gigs have included working on organic farms in Ireland; being first mate on an old sail boat in Holland; working at a long-term home for young men in South Africa; being a journalist and high school teacher in New York and California; washing dishes in Yosemite National Park; teaching English in DC and swimming in Florida; and interning at ESPN in Bristol, which was much less cool that you'd want it to be. My career highlights have been having three of my op-eds run in the New York Times, and being the executive producer of a six-part docu-drama on BET. Because school is cool I have three master's degrees (ODU for MFA, NYU for magazine journalism, University of Connecticut for secondary English education). I live in Norfolk because I believe in its potential. Email your ideas or nicely couched criticism to jesse@altdaily.com.
