(thank you.)
Sooo… right now I’m living temporarily in Cape Town, South Africa. There are endless stories of aching sadness and everlasting redemption that I could tell you. But for now, I’ll focus on the somewhat innane.
I’d say that 90% of white people who live in South African cities have maids. It’s just how it is; mine even came with the apartment. I’m personally not comfortable with this, to be honest. I expressed this to a South African friend. They responded, “Well, it isn’t just about the cleaning, is it?”
So yeah, it’s about giving the uneducated/oppressed a job, and not a hand out. I can dig that. Plus, she makes my bed much better than I ever could.
Still… what’s more ornery, that I have a maid, or that the first thing she does when she gets here is makes herself a sandwich?
