757 Caravan: Rally to Restore Sanity in DC, 10/30

Will you remember what you were doing on October 30, 2010?

You may have noticed that, over the past decade or so, politics has devolved into something of a downward spiral. This season, once again, the election mud seems to be thicker than ever before.

woot.

I won’t rehash how we got here, but here we stand: A place in history where two Comedy Central talk show hosts are emceeing the most serious political rally of the year, the Rally to Restore Sanity. And we’re taking off from Hampton Roads and leading a caravan to DC to attend.

I’m not driving to D.C. on October 30 because I think it will solve the world’s problems. I’m mainly going because it will be a lot of fun to road trip to our nation’s capital, surrounded by good people. Then, once we get there, we’ll meet up with more good people from around the country, and together show those on the margins what a Motivated Middle Majority looks like.

“Why don’t we hear from these 70-80 Percenters?” Jon Stewart asked during his recent announcement of the Rally. “Most likely, because you have things to do.” October 30 will be “a million moderate march, where we take to streets to send a message to our leaders and national media: We Are Here! But we’re only here until six, because we have a sitter.”

Moments later, Stephen Colbert countered with his “March to Keep Fear Alive,” also being held on October 30 on the National Mall.

I’m not the best person to hype these events – I’ll leave that up to the comedians of late night. I’m simply the guy arranging rides from Norfolk, and we’d love to have you on board.

So here’s the basic sketch:

[Update: our 3 flagship passenger vans are fully booked, but we welcome any private vehicles who'd like to party with us.  If you need a ride or would like to give one, please weigh in on the Facebook event page.]

- A caravan of awesomeness headed to DC, 3 flagship passenger vans leading the charge.

- Your private vehicle is welcome to escort us.  Those looking for a ride should be willing to pay for a tank.

- We’ll meet at Chrysler Museum of Art at 6:30 am and the caravan pulls out at 7:00 am for time to get to the rallies.

- We’ll enjoy the day in DC, as a group or on your own, and everyone meets back at the van by 6.

- We’ll get home by 10 pm, just in time to hit that sick Halloween party.

Sound like fun?  If yes, you need to weigh in on the Facebook event page. Like it, Share it, and if you want to come along, hit I’m Attending. If you need a ride or can give a ride, say so in the comments and we’ll get you hooked up.

It’ll be a one-of-a-kind day you will remember long after next year, and we’d love to have you join the fun. A parting thought from Jon Stewart:

“You may be asking yourself right now, ‘Am I the right kind of person to go to this rally?’ The fact that you would even stop to ask yourself that question, as opposed to just jumping up, grabbing the nearest stack of burnable holy books, strapping on a diaper and pointing your car toward DC, that means you just might be right for it.”
