Liz of the Internet Clan!

Alright, you got me. I love the Internet.

I also work in it (if “Internet” has to be capitalized, then I have to believe it is a place), so I spend a lot less time on my computer when I get home, and find this is a nice way to live life. It’s almost 70 degrees in the 757 today – after you read this, if you can, you should get out there because the natural world is great too (reference #5).

1. The Internet helping Internet-famous people move into mainstream: Ever heard of Danielle Ate the Sandwich? Probably not yet, but never fear because the Attucks Theatre is bringing the YouTube ukulele star in December! The Internet WORKS! Also illustrated by Darren Criss from YouTube’s “A Very Potter Musical” getting the new role on Glee.

2.Cats: I figured I’d go ahead and get the most obvious and adorable one out of the way. The best part is that I’m pretty sure cats judge us for spending any time at all looking at funny pictures of them online while laughing and/or making high pitched adoring noises. Judge on, cats. Judge on.

3. The Harry Potter Alliance: I “fan-girled” a little in my car when NPR did a story on the Harry Potter Alliance last week before the premiere of Deathly Hallows. They’re basically a national activist group made up of Harry Potter fans that live by the motto “The weapon we have is love.” Word.

4. OKCupid’s study shows gay people might have better taste in . . .  everything: While straight people are trifling with things like “poker,” “cars,” “my boat,” “lip gloss,” “pretty woman,” and “Nicholas Sparks,” the gays are taking responsibility for holding our culture together with “The Color Purple,” “Tegan and Sara,” “Ani Difranco,” “social justice,” “cuddling,” “Final Fantasy,” and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.”

5. Eating Organic/Community Supported Agriculture: It pleases me to believe that this is pop culture now because there is a weekly feature about the Five Points CSA every week on AltDaily, which you may know by now, can be found on the Internet!

6. Memes: All of them — including the cat named Meme — which takes me back to #2.

7. Etsy: Like Ebay but with a “ts” instead of a “ba”… and for crafts, homemade cloths, and refurbished gemstones of all kinds. It’s rad. Plus, they organize the front page features by color/theme every day. If this isn’t enough for you, nothing will ever be.

8. Those Windows phone commercials I see on TV at work showing how ridiculous people who are always on their smart phones are: Because really guys . . . it’s getting to be a little much. Talk to me with your face sometimes when I’m standing next to you instead of talking with your thumbs to someone else who is far away. (I’m still not buying your smart phone, Windows.)

9. Netflix: The trouble started when we had a TV in our apartment briefly that had apps on it and could connect directly to Netflix. Now we have a TV but it’s only like 20 inches and doesn’t have a power cord, which means everyone is way better off watching documentaries via laptop in bed. What’s even better is that half of my co-workers have Netflix instead of cable as well, so instead of catching up on last night’s episode of The Walking Dead, we’re freaking out about Season 2 of Dexter.

10. Bollywood: Thank you, Internet, for letting me enjoy another country’s pop culture.
