Hurricane Irene Debris Collection, Clean-up Procedures and Important Public Works Information

Norfolk, Va.—As cleanup from Hurricane Irene begins, the Department of Public Works has announced debris collection and clean-up procedures.

Curbside Waste Collection

The standard waste collection procedures are suspended for the week to allow residents to place their trash at the curb at any time.  When setting out waste for curbside collection, please separate it into five distinct piles placed away from overhead wires and not near water meters or fire hydrants.  Separate waste in the following way:

1. Household garbage, bagged and placed in green trash cart.  Overflow trash, such as food waste that will not fit in the trash cart, should be placed in dark plastic bags and tied off.

2. Building debris, furniture and related material.

3. Appliances

4. Yard debris – Leaves and grass clippings (in clear plastic bags). Individual branches must be less than six inches in diameter and no longer than four feet in length.  Groups of branches must be tied and bundled and not exceed 18 inches in diameter.

5. Recycling materials placed in blue recycling cart.

Debris and Bulk Waste Drop-off Sites

Drop-off sites for residents will be open Sunday from 3p to 7p today and it is anticipated that they will be open from 7a to 7p for the rest of the week.  The sites will accept residential storm debris only; the following materials will be accepted:

  • · Yard and clean woody or green vegetative waste.
  • · Bulk, construction and demolition waste.
  • · Household trash and household hazardous waste will not be accepted at the sites.

The sites are located at:
