SevenCities, SevenQuestions: Custom Made Music

Dave Allison runs Custom Made Music from right here. His hometown rock label will be presenting two bands, Ceremony and Screen Vinyl Image , as well as Florida friends Averkiou at the Boot on March 14th for an evening of brain buzzing shoegaze madness. He was kind enough to answer SevenQuestions for SevenCities.

i’ve been promised a night full’o'shoegaze on the 14th. is this accurate and am i going to have my body marinated with spiralling waves of treated guitar fury or am i going to end up gazing at my shoes?

You can gaze at your shoes if you wish but your ears are shure to be filled with fuzzed out guitar distortion. If you point your head to the direction of the stage and open your eyes you will be treated to ceremony400some of the most amazing and inspiring visuals on planet earth!!!2001_space_odyssey_fg2b

what is your favorite woody allen movie?

love_and_deathThe one where he dies…Oh that’s just the movie about him that I created in my mind…waiting to see that one!!!

is custom made actually making physical copies of its music and distributing it?

10inchWe most certainly are. We make him quality vinyl releases and we are very very proud of it!!! We also include CD’s inside the record jackets so you can play the music when your on the go. Our label gives the listener the best of the analog and digital world!!! Here’s my theory about why vinyl is so much better than CD’s or MP3′s…I quote Boys In The Hood “Any Fool With A Dick Can Make A Baby But Only A Real Man Can Raise His Children”…See what I’m saying!!!

any friends you’d like to shout out?

Well I have a few bands I’d love to bring up. Screen Vinyl Image and Ceremony who will be here on March 14th at The Boot are by far two of the best bands making music today and I encourage people to make it out to this show. Averkiou from Gainesville Florida are also on the bill and they bring an amazing blend of sounds and influences to the table creating something that is truly their own. Seattle’s Black Nite Crash are heading out on the road this month promoting their new single that is actually a split 7″ record with The Tamborines from London. Black Nite Crash will be playing shows from Seattle to Austin and then back up the West Coast with stops in LA and Oakland. Shout out to BNC’s Jim Biggs and his wife Tracy who are expecting their 1st baby in May. Shout out to BNC’s Joel Bergstrom and his bride to be Amber!!! Thanks to everyone that has supported the label and all that understand the beauty of vinyl records!!!

do you find virginia to be a hard or easy place to run a label?

Honestly Virginia is a great place to live and run a label. The area has been a huge influence on the way I see music. In this day and age with the internet and all the options to promote music and bands I could run a label from pretty much any place and make it work.

how do you really make money?

Rock N Roll has kept me in business full time since 1993!!!

have you found virginia to be supportive of your endeavor or do you fantasize about running elsewhere?

Virginia has always been home and I have had amazing support from people here over the last 20 years. I started putting on shows in backyards and houses in 1989 and everything just grew from there. I have made some great friends and have great memories of all the shows and bands and great music to come out of this area over the years. I enjoy touring and visiting other places but Virginia is always going to be home to me!!!

ABOUT THE WRITER
George Booker is writing this about himself in the third person. He was considering second person, maybe making this the "Bright Lights, Big City" of bios. He was looking into casting Micheal J. Fox in the forthcoming film adaptation, as the disabled actor would likely portray him with ample charm, sympathy, and fifty-something boyish handsomeness. Recently, however, Booker has realized that only Anne Hathaway or Chiwetel Ejiofor could really capture his essence. Late 20s, Norfolk raised music writer. Former DJ and production head for WVFS Tallahassee, former staff clerk at defunct Norfolk music stores DJ's and Relative Theory.
