Preview: Jedi Mind Tricks at JewMa this Sunday

If you were to Google “Jedi Mind Tricks” right now you would get three results (not including videos) having to do with the rap trio of the same name before you got to anything about “The Force” from Star Wars.

This says a lot about the presence of this underground rap trio, particularly because Star Wars fans aren’t exactly quiet on the internet and Google is a pretty good gauge for pop culture relevance in today’s information age. This doesn’t surprise me because I personally know people who really like Jedi Mind Tricks. My homie Nes, for instance, is traveling to Richmond and DC to see them live. This is particularly odd to me because Jedi Mind Tricks will be right here at The Jewish Mother this Sunday, April 11th. But Nes will be at that show, as well.

This fanatical following and irrational behavior is perfectly in line with Jedi Mind Tricks’ lyrical output and frenetic energy. Hailing from the city of Brotherly Love, the Jedi Mind camp is strangely obsessed with their own metaphorical super-human powers and creative ways to murder people. It’s crazy. And it’s not really my cup of tea – mostly because I don’t like blood in my tea – but I do fully support any venue supporting and bringing underground hip hop to our area. So I wholeheartedly support attending this show if not only to show promoters in the 7 cities that we can sustain this culture and make them some money. Promoters like money. Also the beats are amazing and the dudes can really rap.

But there’s a much, much more compelling reason to go to The Jewish Mother this Sunday. Dicap. Dicap, for those of you who live under a rock, is the best thing to happen to local hip hop since The Clipse dropped “Grindin’” on our unsuspecting asses back in 2002. Not obsessed with drugs like The Clipse or with fantasy murder like Jedi Mind, Dicap is more concerned with rocking the party while actually saying something that means something. I mean, he’s not dropping allegory in every verse, but Dicap isn’t content to sit back and let rap be overrun by silly little thugs or old-timers that are past their prime. And, seriously, when is the last time we had someone worth standing behind that wasn’t already signed with The Neptunes? Please, go show this hard-working emcee some love if you even kind of dig good hip hop. Buy his CD while you’re there.

It’s a pretty simple concept, really. If you are one of the many, many people that get into Jedi Mind Tricks you obviously want to be at JewMa this Sunday. If you are a fan of supporting up-and-coming local acts that fully deserve your love you better be at this show. If you just want to show some love to JewMa for taking chances on unconventional shows like this and counteract the ridiculously commercial shit that pervades the Oceanfront you damn well better be at this show. Look, I’m going to be at this show and I’d like to see you there. So would Nes.

I was here and it was quite nice. I was so impressed that I bought a C.D. from DiCap for a mere $5. Thanks AltDaily.com for my Sunday night delight.

Makes sense that the 757 is harvesting another generation of hip hop.

On the venue, there’s complimentary Wi-Fi at Jewish Mother… if you need to get some things done while listening to good things.

Also, Jewish Mo remains in this space until late October. So that’s about six more months before its Hilltop move (near the old K-Mart.. two skips from Trader Joe’s and Target.)

Nicer to know, too, that Jewish Mom has Wednesday Happy Hour from 5 to 9 p.m. $3 pints include anything Starr Hill and Magic Hat No. 9. Jewish Mother is so number one!!

I had never realized that white people rapped. I also never realized that Mr.Lif went by the name DJ Ruckus. I wuz really diggin the show. When Dicap first got onto da stage I thought he was the janitor who was going to announce the lack of paper towels in the men’s bathroom(which come to find out was NOT true) it was just the excuse I was using for giving out high fives with wet hands. I went down the dmv today and was disappointed to find out the “Dicap” license plate was already taken. I ended up with “Dickcap” pisses me off but people will get the point. I have become a fan of Dicap on facebook, I also became a fan of “I rearrange the toppings on my frozen pizza to make them more uniform”. My mom said no I can’t have him perform at my birthday party because it will wake the neighbors I told her that if we live next to a bunch of hiphop haters we should fu##ing move anyway. I took a picture at the show and I have this special printer paper that prints out temporary tattoos. I now have a picture of Dicap rocking the mic on BOTH biceps.(get your ticket for the gun show ladies!). I have a tight hair cut(cut into the Louis Vuitton symbol don’t hate) but I am going to the thrift store when I done with this review so I can get a beanie and a wig to wear so I can look like a hobbit, no I mean look like Dicap. He dropped a cigar when he was on stage I am trying to return it to him(maybe get him to eat a krispy kreme doughnut with me only if the Hot sign is lit up). I looked earlier on the city website vbgov.com I was trying to find out how we can get them to play dicap through the speakers on atlantic avenue instead of Jimmy Buffet. I received an email back (surprisingly quick response from the city!) The email stated that Jimmy Buffet is the man and if Dicap was so great then people would have license plates dedicated to him like the parrotheads(this is the term that refers to sunburnt, cheap sunglass wearing, wine cooler drinking, people who think Jimmy Buffet is music) do. Also it said that to dislike Jimmy Buffet is unamerican and the terrorists win. Because they hate our freedom and nothing spells freedom like “blew out my flipflop stepped on a pop-top”. I sent a reply to them that I DID infact have a “dickcap” license place no response yet. I got a cd from Dicap for $5 which is super sweet! I have played that Abdul Jabar song all day. I guess dicap is a lakers fan because I google abdul jabar and some guy who played for the lakers came up. So I became a fan of the lakers on facebook. Jewish mother is a great venue to see a show. I didnt see any jedis ( my curfew got in the way of that). Dicap is THE BEST you know you are rocking in virginia beach when Blunt Daddy takes a day off from being a legend in his own mind to congratulate you when you get off the stage!!! I also saw a guy in the crowd who looked like the rapper LIL KEV from the episode “Sweet Dee is dating a retarded person” of It’s always Sunny in philadelphia. I went to cool stuff earlier and traded in all of my WWE dvds and got enough money to buy dicaps album Travelling off of Itunes!!! Now I have a dicap ringtone!! When you call me @ 757-288-0969 you can also hear my “In Virgnia” ringback tone.

Hahaha! Cool! But wasn’t there like 4 other people on the bill last night? That seems a bit biased that you only posted on two people

  • DICAP WAS THE DOPEST! | April 12, 10 @ 8:46 pm

True indeed there were four acts on the bill, but were you at the show? The other two acts were garbage! Lets start first by saying that Dicap should’ve been the opening act for Jedi. The show started on a high note with him but then just dwindled down until Jedi came on. Not sure where you were at, but most of the people around me took that time to chill outside or order food. Rebel E, or whoever they were, were extremely amateur. It seemed like half of their crew didn’t show up and they were scrambling to get it together at the last minute. It started off ok with two guys and one pretty decent song, but then it went to just one guy that performed too many songs, claimed that he wasn’t even part of their crew, was bigging up Dicap half of the time anyways, and then didn’t know any of the lyrics to any other song, yet stood on stage mumbling like he did. The worst hype man ever! Then another guy came on stage who lacked much needed confidence in his performance, and kept randomly giving the crowd unnecessary explanations to every song he performed. After Dicap’s performance, it was a wrap for anyone who came on after him because he set the bar extremely high. His flow is sick, lyrical content is the best I’ve heard in a long time and his overall performance was in my opinion the dopest of the night, and yes that includes Jedi Mind Tricks. Funkin Jones was cool, the chick on the keys had a really nice voice and their best songs were the ones that she had written and/or was featured in. But, lets not forget about how they brought their friend on stage to do Liquid Swords, at a hip hop show mind you, and then he forgets the words and has to read it off the paper.. Yea thumbs down and a lot of “Boo’s“! Jedi’s performance was cool. But that “die motherfucker die” hook got a little monotonous and at times all the murder talk, killing and cutting just gets annoying since they clearly aren’t on an episode of lock up, wearing orange jumpsuits, serving 40 to life. Personally I came to check out Dicap and was very pleased. His set alone was worth the $15 ticket and from what I could see, he had a strong fan base buying his cd’s and showing love. I picked up his cd as well and wasn’t let down. Another heap of dopeness that surpassed others of the night by a landslide. I’m glad VA houses a dope emcee like Dicap and I’m looking forward to his next show.

The show was crazy last night. VA needs more shit like this on a regular. Dicap definitely did the damn thing, I didn’t get a chance to get his CD but look forward to hearing more from him. I have checked out Rebel E before and they go hard but that wasn’t the whole crew cause there is like 8 or 10 of them dudes. They are all cool peoples. The Jewish Mother is the spot. I smoke and love being able to stand right out back where I can still hear the music. Jedi Mind Tricks tore that shit down, nuff said. Lets go VA keep this Hip Hop shit alive.

Who is writing these awesome comments? They are like the slam poetic meanderings of a genius hyperactive 8-year-old on speed….

  • elaine in VA | April 13, 10 @ 11:11 am

When I first walked in I wasn’t so sure if I would have a good time. I was technically popping my Jewish Mother cherry ;p
But yeah Dicap was on when I stepped in and WoW I felt right at home within 10mins. I walked around towards the back to get a drink and heard the coolest beats and people laughing and ‘ohhh’ and ‘ahhh’-ing. That’s how I had the pleasure of meeting Dicap. He was lyrically awesome and too damn funny. I know I went to see JediMindTricks, and they were great but Dicap made that show for me and now that I’m addicted I’m going to have to jock his myspace and twitter and promise him cotton candy to make sure I can hear him live asap!

  • BC | April 13, 10 @ 12:41 pm

…and I’m begining to suspect that they are all written by Dicap himself. Hello, Dicap. Is that you? Step out from behind the curtain.

  • itsdicap | April 13, 10 @ 3:29 pm

Lmao at that third comment. I have been laughing just thinking about it since sunday night … @BC I promise you that the comment or comments were not of my doing. I am pretty good with the words but I don’t think I could have come up with all that crazyness lmao .. plus I wouldn’t say that I look like a janitor. Classic comedy. When I first started to read the comment I thought I was about to be dissed.

As far as the show went. It was a great turn out and I really enjoyed myself all night. Everytime I rock at the Jewish Mother I have a good time. To everybody I met, talked with, who either got a flyer or bought a cd, I am truely grateful. As far as Jedi’s performance they were in control of the crowd the whole time. The funniest part of the show was this guy in a green VA hat who got kicked out about 8 times no lie, and kept walking right back in. He did it so much that even Jedi Mind Tricks said something about it while on stage. Whoever he is he probably can’t recall this seeing how bent he was. Rebel E rocked as well. This was my first time seeing them perform and one of the emcees really caught my ear. Arty Ziff(I think that’s how you spell it) is dope. I got his info and hopefully we can put in some work. Funkin Jonze held it down as well. All in all I wish I could rock a show like this every month or so.
But for now I continue searching for more venues to perform at as well as out of town gigs.
