Humanoids From the Deep Invade 37th and Zen

I don’t know about you, but most Wednesdays I feel like getting my face melted by some punk rock.

That is why I’ll be down at 37th & Zen checking out Humanoids from the Deep, a skull-fucking horror punk band from Norfolk. If you’re unfamiliar with this particular brand of punk rock, then what better occasion than this to broaden your horizons?

I ask Chip Johnson (guitar and vocals), aka Johnny Lazarus, what one can expect this Wednesday night, and he responds, “To have your skulls ripped open, your brains devoured, and your inevitable assimilation into our wretched race. So it should be a good time for all. Plus it’s free.” Yes, that is exactly what I want. Rounding out the band are Barbie Q. (vocals and guitar), Biff Bathwater (bass), and Harvey Numbchuck (drums), FYI.

I ask Chip, “I think the Misfits are an obvious influence upon Humanoids from the Deep, what’s your favorite part about that band?”

He responds, “I have been a big fan of the Misfits ever since I can remember. Already a fan of the energy of punk rock, I found the combination of that with the dark atmosphere of the themes stripped from horror films a perfect match.”

I continue, “What is your favorite film and why?”

“Hard question. The easy answer is Humanoids from the Deep, obviously, because we named our band after it. It is great because of how ludicrous and horrible it is. Plus it is all about mutant fish coming on land to kill the men and mate with the women to perpetuate their species, and who can’t relate to that?

“Really it is a tie between that and Night of the Living Dead. Night is just a classic horror film. It spawned the modern zombie film as we know it today and, being living dead ourselves, we have a certain connection to that. Its allure comes from a much different place than Humanoids. But they each have their charm.”

So if you like horror films or punk rock (or are considering becoming one of the undead), I will see you there tonight. You can learn more and connect with the band on  or their Facebook.
