Lush With A Cause: Bar Crawl In Ghent Tonight

Put on your drinking bib, your shortest skirt, and shave off one eyebrow because the Ghent Bar Tour is taking place tonight.

Go because Ghent is one of our favorite neighborhoods in the world, and you will make new friends = love your life here more.

Donate because the proceeds go to Hope House, the good people who look after one of my best friends in the Seven Cities, Ms. Hollywood RaceCar Driver.

I was lucky enough to meet Hollywood one of the first few days I moved here. If you go to Fair Grounds, you know her. She’s the lady with the face brighter than a full moon and a spirit greater than the Holy Ghost itself.

Here’s a piece I wrote about Hollywood’s birthday party at Tortilla West last year. You’ll also learn a little bit about Hope House in there too.

Here’s the website for the crawl: http://www.ghentbartour.com

The details, in Facebook news feed-lifted short-hand:

Hope House is so excited to be the beneficiaries of the bar tour. I was at the pre-registration and the energy is amazing! Keeping it local doesn’t get any better than this! We are in for the ride of our life! It is most definately a time to meet new people and I can tell you first hand they are an amazing group!

Imagine everyday with a smile brighter than the moon and a spirit bigger than anything out there!!! Hope House gives so much light and spirit to this area and our lives are so much better for it, because each individual we support gives back so much…take a moment, take a breathe, you will feel something you’ve never felt before…take it from me when life gets you down…there’s always someone out there to make you smile…we are all in this together, come hell or high water…..each of you make such a difference…embrace everyone and lets “bar crawl” for a great cause!

ABOUT THE WRITER
Jesse is the editor in chief of AltDaily, and he's going to take this bio seriously, but not so seriously that he's going to continue in the third person. I've been involved with a bunch of local projects and civic groups in various roles, including: Hampton Roads, The Canvas; Art | Everywhere, Street Performance in Norfolk; Survive Norfolk; Hampton Roads Pride/Out in the Park; Bike Norfolk; re:Vision Norfolk, and such. I originally came to Norfolk as a Perry Morgan fellow in ODU's creative writing program. Before that I bummed around quite a bit, writing stacks of books that never got published, hitchhiking, couchsurfing, riding the Greyhound up down and back across this country. Some of my favorite jobs and volunteer gigs have included working on organic farms in Ireland; being first mate on an old sail boat in Holland; working at a long-term home for young men in South Africa; being a journalist and high school teacher in New York and California; washing dishes in Yosemite National Park; teaching English in DC and swimming in Florida; and interning at ESPN in Bristol, which was much less cool that you'd want it to be. My career highlights have been having three of my op-eds run in the New York Times, and being the executive producer of a six-part docu-drama on BET. Because school is cool I have three master's degrees (ODU for MFA, NYU for magazine journalism, University of Connecticut for secondary English education). I live in Norfolk because I believe in its potential. Email your ideas or nicely couched criticism to jesse@altdaily.com.
