Percy Harvin: The next local sports embarrassment?

It’s being reported that Virginia Beach native, up-and-coming wide receiver Percy Harvin has failed a drug test for marijuana at the NFL draft combine in February.

Harvin is expected to be a first round draft pick in the NFL draft this weekend.

I have never been big on this kid. I’ll admit, his talent is huge, and on the college level he has broken out in the biggest games.

But Percy hasn’t shown one bit of class since high school. He attended Landstown in Virginia Beach. A star in indoor track, basketball and football, Percy managed to get himself suspended from all three sports on several occasions. His junior year he earned a 1-game football suspension for simple unsportsmanlike conduct. His senior year he upgraded to a 2-game suspension for bumping an official and cussing him out. In his senior year basketball season he got into a fight during a game against rival Green Run, which got him kicked out of high school athletics altogether and left him off the championship track team his final year of high school.

Yet with all the controversy surrounding his problems in high school, he was still a top talent and highly recruited by the best football schools in the country.

Percy chose to play for the Florida Gators where he was an impact from Day 1. In his freshman year he scored a touchdown in their National Championship win over the incredibly soft, highly over-rated Ohio State Buckeyes. His sophomore season saw big numbers; he set a school record as the only receiver in school history to gain 1,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a career; and was named to the All-S.E.C. team. His junior year was very injury-plagued, and in some circles earning himself a rep for being a little on the soft side. how-highHarvin missed a handful of games including the S.E.C. championship game, but he played through an injury for another National Championship win. After the success of his junior year and second National Title, Percy decided to go pro and enter the NFL draft.

While Percy Harvin is obviously an insane athletic talent, his most recent fumble is by far his worst yet. You’re on the verge of the NFL draft, man. The big time. Guaranteed millions of dollars. And you get blazed with some frat dogs in Gainesville? Get serious. While he almost got through a very short college career with a flawless rap sheet, he somehow screwed up on his biggest stage to date. This act of stupidity and his past disrespect for officials and players can only lead me to believe that we’re going to be hearing a lot about this prima donna’s behavior for years to come.

Why does our region produce so many “problem” athletes? Allen Iverson, and both Vick brothers have been enough of an embarrassment. It seems to me it starts during the high school years. When kids are able to skate by on their althletism and not take responsibilty, they don’t learn consequences.
