Reasons to Leave Your House This Weekend

“And what is good, Phaedrus, And what is not good— Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?” — Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

We sure don’t, Phaedrus.

Here are some of the good things happening out and about (said with Canadian accent) in the 757 this weekend. You’ll know it’s good when you see it. Don’t let your Yankee friends try to sell you otherwise.

Friday

Oh no, a dino!

THE BEST OF THE PUSHERS

JewMa! First person to leave a comment saying, Yip Yip Yip! gets two free tickets to what promises to be a promising sketch comedy show.

SWEET TOOTH – ART OPENING

“This is on FIRST FRIDAY! Yes, Old Town Portsmouth has a first Friday. Not only is this going to be a really SWEET artshow, but you can stuff your face and scarf down candy while you peruse all this SWEET artwork!”

There’s going to be some solid art in this show. Plus, again, that awesome ferry with the wheel that does nothing but look boss! I’m there.

GOT THE BLUES? opening reception

“Love the Blues? Feeling Blue? and just the color BLUE…all celebrated in this multimedia show of local and regional artist and fine craftspersons. Paintings, photography, basketry, jewelry, sculpture, etc.”

TIDEWATER ARTS OUTREACH TO PRESENT 1,000TH PROGRAM ON AUGUST 6

“At Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, the noon program will feature Thad Dixon on piano.”

In 2009, more than 5,300 people were reached through 230 Tidewater Arts Outreach programs. The Healing Arts… isn’t that phrase just lighter than air?

Art Walk Town Center Va. Beach

“Local Arts & Crafts in the streets.” You can’t throw a canvas like a discuss on Friday without hitting an art event. Glory be, the arts on me.

Sunset Kayak Paddle

I just like how those words sound together. “Explore Back Bay and its marshes by kayak at False Cape State Park as the sun is setting over the bay. Kayaks and equipment are provided – no paddling experience is necessary. Trip meets at Little Island City Park in Sandbridge. Reservations are required; please call the park at (757) 426-7128 to sign up.”

Power Couples and Professionals

Networking at Granby Theater.

Saturday

Hello, nurse.

Lady Gaga Monster Ball

Our friends at San Antonio Sam’s in Ghent are throwing a party where girls dress up as Gaga, guys dress as their favorite monster. “We’re decorating to the max – disco ball, club lights, fog machine, even a chandelier! Outside is more monster/horror theme on the patio.”

Horseshoe Clinic

But before you go to the party, make sure your horse is properly shoed, courtesy of the Portsmouth Horseshoe Club.

Farm To Feast Week

Locally grown food just tastes better.

Freeplay: Modern & Classic Gaming

This sounds just phenomenal. According to my boy Blue, “Freeplay, modern and classic (video) gaming at the Chesapeake Pub Library. Saturday. www.sevagaming.com. Totally free. Movies. Arcades set on free. Consoles from the Atari 2600 to the Xbox360.

Counting Crows @ nTelos

Counting Crows were my favorite band my first two years of high school, and I will not apologize for that, to you or your greaser friends. I’ll be at this. If you’re going solo, I invite you to hang with my friends and I before. We’ll take that awesome ferry over together. It’ll be like old times, new. Here’s my interview with Adam, the lead singer.

The Grimy Ghent Stand-Up Special

“The long awaited sequel of Norfolk’s grimy stand-up scene showcase. Come support our ever so small, but talented comedic agenda.” The event comes highly recommended by our own George “Money Bags” Booker, is it must be A OK.

In related/unrelated news, I was reading an interview with Tracy Morgan today. He said that you can never be cool and funny, except for Eddie Murphy. For some reason I found that interesting.

Power to the people, momma.

Noblefest

A solid music line-up, at a farm in Pungo, and for a good cause. I can dig it.

“Feel the Fills”

If you’re out by Cardinal Skate Shop in VB Saturday night, check this out. It’s young Hampton’s first solo show. Everyone deserves for their first solo show to be one of those nights where they stop for a second–like, everything freezes–and all of the bad crap from their life washes through their brain, and they think, Yes, it was all worth it.

Happy Birthday Coast Guard!

“The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum is a panoramic experience, covering over 250 years of Portsmouth’s history.” I think we’d all be happier in existential ways if we were better connected to our local history.

THE 5th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CARIBBEAN FESTIVAL

“Enjoy the exciting beat of CALYPSO, REGGAE, SALSA, SOCA and other Caribbean music. This is a day of tropical rhythm, cuisine, carnival and culture as only the Caribbean can offer!”

Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra with Virginia Beach Symphonicity

“The Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra with help from members of Virginia Beach’s Symphonicity will perform a fundraising concert.” AT WORST, this will be a terribly pleasant evening.

Gina Dalmas & CTP in OV Saturday night 8/7!

Her back-up band is called the Cow Tippin’ Playboys. That’s all there is to say about that.

The Mike Federali Show at Keagan’s Hilltop.

They’re shooting a music video too.

Premier Gallery of Ghent Grand Opening Celebration

They want you to RSVP.

SEE I TOLD YOU IT’S FUN HERE.

Jesu = Out.

I’ll second that Harwell Grice Band suggestion. Solid Virginia Bluegrass.

Oh, just found out, Harwell Grice Band is actually going to be playing at New Belmont as well tonight (Saturday), so check them out there if you miss the Monarch performance.

ABOUT THE WRITER
Jesse is the editor in chief of AltDaily, and he's going to take this bio seriously, but not so seriously that he's going to continue in the third person. I've been involved with a bunch of local projects and civic groups in various roles, including: Hampton Roads, The Canvas; Art | Everywhere, Street Performance in Norfolk; Survive Norfolk; Hampton Roads Pride/Out in the Park; Bike Norfolk; re:Vision Norfolk, and such. I originally came to Norfolk as a Perry Morgan fellow in ODU's creative writing program. Before that I bummed around quite a bit, writing stacks of books that never got published, hitchhiking, couchsurfing, riding the Greyhound up down and back across this country. Some of my favorite jobs and volunteer gigs have included working on organic farms in Ireland; being first mate on an old sail boat in Holland; working at a long-term home for young men in South Africa; being a journalist and high school teacher in New York and California; washing dishes in Yosemite National Park; teaching English in DC and swimming in Florida; and interning at ESPN in Bristol, which was much less cool that you'd want it to be. My career highlights have been having three of my op-eds run in the New York Times, and being the executive producer of a six-part docu-drama on BET. Because school is cool I have three master's degrees (ODU for MFA, NYU for magazine journalism, University of Connecticut for secondary English education). I live in Norfolk because I believe in its potential. Email your ideas or nicely couched criticism to jesse@altdaily.com.
