Do it.
I already released my hot air this week, so I’ll get straight to the best of what’s around.
(As always, Doctor Music has you covered when it comes to the music in his Groove Advisory column.)
Friday, October 1st
“The Kids Aren’t Alright” Photography Exhibit by Richard Perkins
The first solo exhibit by Richard Perkins, who we frankly have featured a bit too much, but we love the Young Lion, so whatever.
Here’s the last photo series of his we published. It’s pretty right on.
VSC’s Anne Frank
Four performances this weekend. We were there for opening night. As the cliche goes, we laughed, we cried, we had a baguette at Empire afterward. Seriously, this is a special production. Discount tickets and champagne reception for young professionals too.
WHO LET THE DOGS OUT?!? OPENING RECEPTION
“Multi-media art show featuring our furry canine friends.” At Riverview Gallery in P-Town, where it is a First Friday. Our pal Skye Zentz will be at Courthouse Galleries as well, so that’s positive.
Hockey
is back.
Forbidden Broadway
This play is refusing to let me make it a smaller font, so it must be good. It’s the last weekend of Forbidden Broadway at Little Theatre of Norfolk. Dig it.
Williamsburg Scottish Festival
This goes Friday and Saturday. In unrelated news, Mike Myers is personally responsible for a generation of Americans thinking Scottish people are equally insane and awesome.
Saturday, October 2nd
Virginia Children’s Festival
“Hampton Roads’ most beloved family festival is filled with more than 100 creative and interactive activities, storytelling, hands-on workshops and educational displays, cultural experiences, arts and crafts, costumed characters and more! This event is designed with children 10 and younger in mind.”
Plus, Mr. Steve will be there. WHAT MORE DO YOU PEOPLE WANT.
Northside Skate Plaza Opening
“After three years of anticipation, the City of Norfolk will cut the ribbon on Northside Skate Plaza on Sat., Oct. 2, at 11:30 a.m… Northside Skate Plaza features mostly solid concrete construction; double L-shaped bowls of 7 ft and 9 ft depth that will appeal to traditional skateboarders; several different ramp, stair, railing, and jump configurations; and some open flat areas which allow for stunts and freestyle skateboarding. … For more information, contact Roberto Ramos, Northside Skate Plaza supervisor, at (757) 441-5834.”
Virginia Opera’s “Rigoletto”
We went backstage at Harrison Opera House this week. Check out Hannah learning how to sing opera from the kind fella who plays Rigoletto, that jester hunchback.
ADVENTURES IN ARCHAEOLOGY: Celebrating Virginia Archaeology Month
“Learn about artifacts, play the seriation game, and experience a simulated archeological dig—sifting the soil for treasure!”
As always, big ups to links that refuse to change fonts for me.
2nd Annual Olde Towne Zombie Bar Crawl
I like every bit and every piece of this. I’ll be there, draped up and deaded out.
The Noblemen’s Oktoberfest
Here’s what it looked like last year. Seems fun, eh.
Beads & Rocks/ Halfmoon Craft Festival
I’m not going to say one more thing about this. I got a feeling they either sold you with “beads & rocks” or they didn’t.
ANNUAL PIG & OYSTER FEST
at the Old Coast Guard Station. Now those are good words too.
ODU Young Democrats Campaign Kick-off and Social! (FREE FOOD)
I’m excited that these kids are excited.
Michael Payne @ Decorum
“Nationally known interior designer Michael Payne, the original host and interior designer of HGTV’s Designing for the Sexes,” will be hanging out at Ghent’s premiere furniture store, Decorum.
Photography Event!!
“We have selected some of the areas most diverse and talented photographers! See you then!”
The Celebrate Trees Project
“Norfolk holds the Arbor Day celebration in October to recognize the area’s optimal planting season- October 15 – March 31. The weather conditions are cool during these months and allow for root establishment.”
They’re giving away native tree seedlings and telling you what to do with them. I’m okay with that.
MONSTER FEST
“Monster Fest is the annual one day horror convention held in early Oct. at the Chesapeake Central Library. Monster Fest is a small local con, for fans of classic horror in film and literature.”
Sunday, October 3rd
FirstLook Film Forum
“If you love movies, join a discriminating group of cinephiles to share brunch, conversation, critique, and an advance screening of the latest offering from a roster of prominent independent, foreign, and American filmmakers.”
I try to make this every Sunday.
Lori Nix: The City and Other Stories
“This show is in conjunction with the 33rd Annual Literary Festival, “Hard Times in America” Lori Nix’s photographed dioramas play with the edge between reality and illusion while exploring the potentiality of misfortune in American life.”
At ODU’s art gallery, which really is quite nice, if you’ve never been.
India Fest 2010
Indian food is my Prozac. I’ll be there.
Atlantis Down
The premiere of this Hampton Roads-made feature film is actually Friday, but it’s sold out, so I’m listing it here. Check check check the interview I did with the movie’s go-getting producers.
Bark in the Park
Got a dog? Live in Chesapeake? Have a soul? “Join hundreds of walkers who will be raising money to support Chesapeake’s homeless animals”
Coming Next Week
33rd Annual Literary Festival at Old Dominion University
Our region’s big annual literary festival. As a recent MFA grad from ODU, I can testify. Power of words. Witness!
As dawn has yet to break over the Seven Cities, and my window is pelted with rain, I leave you with:
let me remind you once again:
WE WILL OVERPOWER YOU
WITH THE FORCE
OF OUR
GOOD WILL

ABOUT THE WRITER
Jesse is the editor in chief of AltDaily, and he's going to take this bio seriously, but not so seriously that he's going to continue in the third person. I've been involved with a bunch of local projects and civic groups in various roles, including: Hampton Roads, The Canvas; Art | Everywhere, Street Performance in Norfolk; Survive Norfolk; Hampton Roads Pride/Out in the Park; Bike Norfolk; re:Vision Norfolk, and such.
I originally came to Norfolk as a Perry Morgan fellow in ODU's creative writing program. Before that I bummed around quite a bit, writing stacks of books that never got published, hitchhiking, couchsurfing, riding the Greyhound up down and back across this country. Some of my favorite jobs and volunteer gigs have included working on organic farms in Ireland; being first mate on an old sail boat in Holland; working at a long-term home for young men in South Africa; being a journalist and high school teacher in New York and California; washing dishes in Yosemite National Park; teaching English in DC and swimming in Florida; and interning at ESPN in Bristol, which was much less cool that you'd want it to be. My career highlights have been having three of my op-eds run in the New York Times, and being the executive producer of a six-part docu-drama on BET. Because school is cool I have three master's degrees (ODU for MFA, NYU for magazine journalism, University of Connecticut for secondary English education). I live in Norfolk because I believe in its potential. Email your ideas or nicely couched criticism to jesse@altdaily.com.
