There Is Both Independent Drama And Female Comedy In Virginia

Local boy and spurned Cali actor Jason Kypros has been doing quite a job of keeping the flag flying for regular local comedy with his Sunday night comedy parties at the New Belmont. He’s also a great advocate for local theatre. These agendas clash beautifully when he does his Fix the Floor Fundraisers at the Little Theatre of Norfolk. The next one is coming up on Saturday night (March 28 if yr nasty). Local art, live music, live stand-up, all for the theatre. Local sketch artisans The Pushers are the special guests, but another significant performer will be psuedo-local funny lady Cori Healy. Cori is a legitimately funny female comic, an extremely rare type around these parts. There are a few reasons for this sad state of laffairs, and “women aren’t funny” doesn’t happen to be one of them. We’ll start with two: the few dedicated comedy establishments left in the area have no interest in nurturing unique local talent and not only tolerate but encourage a pandering atmosphere that smart women with a sense of humor find either repugnant or stupid. The good female comics who brave these waters and build their skills eventually find it worthwhile to move to places where the comedy establishment isn’t so dedicated to depravity. Maybe that’s why Cori’s profile places her in Boston.

ABOUT THE WRITER
George Booker is writing this about himself in the third person. He was considering second person, maybe making this the "Bright Lights, Big City" of bios. He was looking into casting Micheal J. Fox in the forthcoming film adaptation, as the disabled actor would likely portray him with ample charm, sympathy, and fifty-something boyish handsomeness. Recently, however, Booker has realized that only Anne Hathaway or Chiwetel Ejiofor could really capture his essence. Late 20s, Norfolk raised music writer. Former DJ and production head for WVFS Tallahassee, former staff clerk at defunct Norfolk music stores DJ's and Relative Theory. Current Film Editor and Contributor to No Ripcord Magazine, contributed blurbs to Link and Port Folio Magazine.
