Lots to do this weekend. And though I’m including Bieber, I really hope people will check out as much of the awesome cultural happenings around town as possible. (Though no offense to Justin; I find him adorable.)
The Weepies
at The Attucks
Friday 7:30 pm
INFO: http://www.discoverymusicseries.com/weepies.html
This indie folk-pop band is made up of a married singer-songwriter couple from California. Their sound is pretty, catchy and charming with some great love songs. It puts you in a happy and free place when you listen to it. Guaranteed, this show, which is a part of the Discovery Music Series at The Attucks Theatre, is a great place to bring a date or a bunch of a friends. Check out the video below:
Brad Garrett
at the Sandler Center
Friday 8 pm
INFO: http://www.sandlercenter.org/index/events/id/312
Best-known for his role on Everybody Loves the Raymond, Brad Garrett apparently also does stand-up. Worth taking your mom and aunts to, for sure.
Phil Roebuck
at 37th & Zen
Friday 9 pm
INFO: As my friend (and Pfac’s marketing director) Mike McGrann so perfectly put it: “Philip Roebuck is one of the most unbelievable performances that I have ever seen.” Roebuck is one of the musicians that will be performing at The Rise Up, our local music showcase on December 4. Check it out and pick up tickets. It. Is going. To rock.
Virginia Fashion Week
at Waterside
Thurs through Sunday
INFO: http://www.vafashionweek.net/
This year, VA Fashion Week will take place at Waterside. Though it goes on all weekend, the main event is Saturday night, when from 6 to 10 pm Virginia’s premiere designers show their collections on the catwalk.
Justin Bieber
at Norfolk Scope
Sat 7 pm

Kim Kardashian has the Fever. And so do I.
AltDaily NaNoWriMo Write-In
at Prince Books
Sunday 2 pm
INFO: http://www.altdaily.com/blogs/arts-blogs/literature-blogs/hampton-roads-cozies-up-to-national-novel-writing-month.html
National Novel Writing Month is in full swing, and writers who are definitely committed to completing a novel this month are probably in need of a really good, productive sesh this weekend. Tony DeLateur, from the ODU MFA Writers in Community program, will speak briefly to re-inspire writers. And the rest of the time will be spent writing, writing, writing.
Virginia Roast & Toast with Jackass Flats
at The Hermitage
Sunday 3-6 pm
INFO: http://www.hermitagefoundation.org/events/Virginia_Roast_and_Toast.html
An afternoon by the river featuring fresh Virginia oysters, authentic barbeque, regional microbrews, wine and bluegrass music? Yes, please.
2010 ALLI Awards
at the American Theatre
Sunday 4 pm
INFO: http://www.culturalli.org
The ALLI Awards recognize businesses and individuals in Hampton Roads for their contribution to the arts and cultural community. The inclusion of this event is actually just a way for me to mention that AltDaily is nominated in the media category this year. (There are no other nominees in this category actually, so I’ll be exceptionally disappointed and embarrassed if we don’t win.) (By the way, I’m just kidding that I included it just for that–this is really a great event.) (But I’m not kidding about how disappointed and embarrassed I will be.)
Kris Kristofferson
at the Ferguson Center
Sunday 7 pm
INFO: http://fergusoncenter.cnu.edu/artists/kris.htm
Find out why our moms think this guy’s so hot. (Or don’t they?)
Buika
at American Theatre
Monday 7:30 pm
INFO: http://www.hamptonarts.net/artist-info/?products_id=3776
I hadn’t heard of Buika before seeing that she’s coming to the American Theatre, but that’s what’s so great about the American Theatre–it introduces this region to gorgeous world music. Buika is a Spanish singing sensation, who has been dubbed “Queen of Flamenco.” Her music blends together jazz, funk, flamenco, copla and neo-soul. And IMHO: Buika is pret-ty sex-y. Witness below:
