Hampton Roads Happy Hours: The List (so far…)

A little while back I wrote a blog asking about the best Hampton Roads happy hours.

Since bars and restaurants can’t legally advertise happy hours in the state of Virginia, we thought this would be a tasty way to circumvent the rules for the good people of the 757.

Today I’ll be hosting the first AltDaily Happy Hour Live Blog. Colley Cantina in Ghent. 4-7pm. Mention AltDaily and get half price appetizers. They’ll be rolling out their new menu and Stone 09.09.09 Vertical Epic by Stone Brewing Co., one of the best in the country.

Hello comrades.

Hello comrades.

Yes, there will be drinking. There will be observations and jokes. There will be a wobbly bike ride home for me. But I hope that you also stop by and say hello. Consider this an Editor’s Office Hours of sorts. You can suggest story ideas, complain, or even give a shout out.

Have a business, band, or art you’re promoting? Stop by and I’ll mention it in the live blog. I’ll even throw up a link.

Mazol Tov.

Following is the list as it stands, as culled from the comments section of the first blog and emails to happyhour@24sevencities.com. The list is short, but I would trust it; all bars on the list were either recommended by a patron, or suggested by an owner or manager. Any bar owner or manager that reads AltDaily gets the benefit of the doubt from me. Have a suggestion? Email us or add it to the comment section. I’ll repost at the next Happy Hour Live Blog (location TBD).

All notes are from the suggesters.

San Antonio Sam’s 1501 Colley Avenue, Norfolk, Happy hour 7 days a week from 3-7,Discounts on well drinks, domestic bottled beer, yuengling draft, house wine and house margaritas, .40 wings, 2.50 nachos, 1.00 flautas & 1.00 tacos (tacos available all day and night at the bar only) Saturday power hour from 5 to 6. $1 well drinks and domestic bottled beer; Nightly beer specials during the week.

Ashley’s Bistro We have a happy hour. It’s from 6 pm to 9 pm, Monday-Saturday.
We offer Bud, Bud Light, PBR, and Miller Light draft for $2. And on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays we have half off on buffalo wings. Come check us out we’re located inside the Holiday Inn Virginia Beach Executive Center.

PDX (Paradocks in East Ocean View). They have decent drink specials – but what sets them aside for us is the customer service to our crowd.

New Belmont, Norfolk, Thursdays, $1.50 Coronas and cheap tacos.

Scotty Quix Downtown
M-F 5:00-8:00
$1 Budlight and American Ale Drafts
$5 Burgers / Chicken Sandwiches / Appetizers

Baxters Downtown
M-F 5:00-9:00
$3.99 for any liquour (top-shelf included)
$5.99 for any thing on the menu (not the best food but its cheap)

Cogan’s (Norfolk/Colonial Ave) has a pretty rad happy hour (11-7pm…8 hours!). $1.50 domestic bottles/drafts, 1/2 off well drinks, $4 aventinus drafts, and $1 off everything else.

Red Dog Saloon. Although I hate to admit it.. has one of the best happy hours around. Bar/City: Red Dogs on Colley Ave – Ghent, Norfolk, VA. Day/Hours: 5pm?-2am M-Sat. 12-12? Sun; Deal: Everyday 50% off 5-7pm, then 25% off till 9pm, Buy one get one free Apps, and $5 dollar burgers.

Smackwater Jacks in the plaza in VB Blvd next to Bonefish, has Happy Hour 7 days a week from the time they open (11am) until 8pm.  Beers are 1.50 to 2.50 and well drinks are 2.50 each. If you want to be ‘smacked’, you can add 1.00 to your drink order and receive an additional shot of whichever liquor you are drinking making a double $3.50.  Great deal if you ask me.

Casey’s Pub on Virginia Beach Blvd next to Farm Fresh has the same deal, 2.50 per drink, cheap beer and 1.00 for drafts.

The Blarney Stone on South Plaza Trail has the exact same offer with one change…you can get a glass o’ wine for $2.00 and this “GLASS” is 12ozs!  That to me is quite the deal also.  These three bars allow smoking so the trade-off is non-smokers have to inhale the surrounding air to drink for cheap!

At Hilltop I found the AJ Gator’s there has a pretty good beer special and that same 2.50 deal on Thursdays for some reason.  Beers from 3:30 to 4:30 M-F are 1.50, then 4:30-5:30 they are 2.00, then 5:30-6:30 they are 2.00.  So if you are available to drink at 3:30 you can have quite a few, really cheap for those few hours.

ABOUT THE WRITER
Jesse is the editor in chief of AltDaily, and he's going to take this bio seriously, but not so seriously that he's going to continue in the third person. I've been involved with a bunch of local projects and civic groups in various roles, including: Hampton Roads, The Canvas; Art | Everywhere, Street Performance in Norfolk; Survive Norfolk; Hampton Roads Pride/Out in the Park; Bike Norfolk; re:Vision Norfolk, and such. I originally came to Norfolk as a Perry Morgan fellow in ODU's creative writing program. Before that I bummed around quite a bit, writing stacks of books that never got published, hitchhiking, couchsurfing, riding the Greyhound up down and back across this country. Some of my favorite jobs and volunteer gigs have included working on organic farms in Ireland; being first mate on an old sail boat in Holland; working at a long-term home for young men in South Africa; being a journalist and high school teacher in New York and California; washing dishes in Yosemite National Park; teaching English in DC and swimming in Florida; and interning at ESPN in Bristol, which was much less cool that you'd want it to be. My career highlights have been having three of my op-eds run in the New York Times, and being the executive producer of a six-part docu-drama on BET. Because school is cool I have three master's degrees (ODU for MFA, NYU for magazine journalism, University of Connecticut for secondary English education). I live in Norfolk because I believe in its potential. Email your ideas or nicely couched criticism to jesse@altdaily.com.
