Green Drinks’ “There’s a Nightmare in My Closet” Party

The greatest thing about Hampton Roads is how we occasionally pull together and leave our individual cities behind and pretend we are all part of this “metropolis.” A great conglomerate of cities that brings out the best of each, together.

This weekend will be the perfect example of that. Hampton Roads is lucky enough to be home to five chapters of Green Drinks. Green Drinks is a group of people who monthly gather informally to discuss environmental issues. Each city has a different day they meet each month.

This Friday Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, the Peninsula and the Williamsburg chapters will all be joining together to have the first Hampton Roads Green Drinks event! Please join us at 8 pm at the Big Easy–a Virginia Green restaurant–in downtown Norfolk for our “There’s a Nightmare in My Closet” party to help support the Salvation Army and join all Hampton Roads Green Drinkers.

The idea is that you rummage through your closets and find something funny/awful to wear to the party as well as clothes that you can’t/don’t wear any longer to donate to the Salvation Army. And if you can’t think of anything, here are some ideas for  “green” Halloween costumes.
  • Corpse Bride/Runaway Bride/Bridezilla. Everyone knows someone who is NOT saving their old wedding dress to pass down. Borrow it and wear some great tennis shoes. Or wear crazy makeup and be a frazzled Bridezilla. All your friends still love their dresses? The Salvation Army is full of eye-catching finds waiting to be recycled.
  • Think of the worst teacher you ever had. Chances are you can think of someway to make fun of them. They’ll never know your doing it and it will make you feel better!
  • White trash. Dress in all white with a trash can around you.
  • Jack-n-a-box. Old cardboard trash can cut, covered in wrapping paper with a pvc handle, and worn to be a jack-n-a-box.
  • Classic ghost. Old sheet, two holes for eyes.
  • Check your favorite news page. I guarantee there is someone you would love to pretend to be for one night. Maybe a golfer? Tennis player? Basketball player? Celebrity?
  • My favorite of all costumes is when you dress like someone you know, maybe its a significant other or a best friend. Either way, steel (“borrow”) some of their favorite clothes and surprise them by wearing it this weekend. Make sure to use their mannerisms/dialect/favorite sayings. Too much is ok. PS This only works if they have a good sense of humor. And self-esteem.

The point of the Hallo-Green is to be creative and try to reuse things that we are able to find without purchasing more things that may end up in a landfill.

Happy Hallo-Green!
