Call for AltDaily Interns!

In not quite two years of existence,

AltDaily has become a trusted source of journalism, culture, progressive perspectives, activism, and 24 other vital nutrients.

Our goals are to help the people of Norfolk and all of Hampton Roads be more literate and informed; to encourage citizen engagement with local communities and political structures; and, above all, for us all to fall (deeper) in love with this place we call home.

We believe that all humans deserve equal rights; that progressive regional transportation solutions (specifically rail and bike infrastructure) is necessary; that the form of our physical world is nearly as important as the function; that a connection to the land and to our food is important; that culture doesn’t just happen, it needs to be created; that the arts matter and should be everywhere; that the soul is, in some way, real, and must be protected and fed and monitored like any other vital organ; that voting makes you a better person; and that every lyric in the song, “It’s a Small World After All” is as true as the sky is blue.

Why is this stuff important for an intern to know? Because we don’t want our interns doing busy work; we want you to be a part of this mission we’ve got here. Please note: Jesse might also practice surgery on you sometimes if it’s a slow newsday.

Editorial Interns

Editorial interns get a chance to learn the news, journalism, and activism businesses up close and personal. Everything our editorial interns do is real and will have a legit affect on the community here.

Editorial interns report to Jesse, our Editor-in-Chief. They do everything he does, which includes: editing; publishing stories; writing; reporting; fact-checking; organizing community meetings; research; social media; working with contributors; and many other things that we generally think are pretty cool.

The amount of time required per week is flexible. You should be able to recieve either internship credit or independent study credit. It’s helpful if you like Yorgo’s, Beirut, and Woody Allen movies.

Send an email to jesse@altdaily.com with:

  • A paragraph about what you’re most passionate about.
  • A couple lines about your dream job.
  • A few lines about why you want to work with AltDaily.
  • Explain something that makes you interesting.
  • Days/Hours available.

Marketing Interns

AltDaily has been able to expand our reach, as well as our business, because of good, solid marketing. If you hope to one day be a marketing exec, a VP of Sales, an event planner, a tour manager, or a Hollywood agent, this is where you start. Marketing interns will help us with organizing everything from events, volunteers, flier campaigns, social media and viral campaigns, ad campaigns, administration, and general sales and marketing research.

No experience is required, however, you must exhibit:

  • An outgoing personality. No wallflowers allowed.
  • Self-motivation.
  • Organizational skills.

Additionally, the more you have of the following qualities, the better equipped you will probably be:

  • Photoshop skills.
  • Decent writing ability. (Don’t worry, you don’t have to be Shakespeare when you have good editors on your side.)
  • Facebook and Twitter savvy.
  • A decent camera.
  • Experience in event planning, sales, marketing or media.

If interested, send an email to alison@altdaily.com and be sure to include:

  • A paragraph about what you’re most passionate about.
  • A couple lines about your dream job.
  • A few lines about why you want to work with AltDaily.
  • Any experience or qualifications you have that we should know about.
  • Days/Hours available.

Web Interns

Web interns will help Hannah, the Publisher, with the development of AltDaily. You will be shown the actual coding and structure that makes it all work, and then we will look to you for help in: site layout; SEO; working with our ad management system; plugin installation and customization; app development; mobile technology development; troubleshooting; streamlining; and anything else your beautiful mind can dream up for us.

You must exhibit the following:

  • Experience with CSS, PHP, HTML and general coding. Flash and design skills are a plus, but not necessary.
  • Experience with WordPress.
  • SEO experience.

To apply, send an email to alison@altdaily.com with:

  • A listing of your web development skills.
  • Links to sites you own or have worked on.
  • A couple ideas of what you’d do to AltDaily to make it better somehow.
  • Days/Hours available.
