Spiritual Visions: Crossing Boundaries, Making Connections
December 17 – February 2, 2010

Theme:  The concept of this exhibition begins with the museum’s permanent collection.  Truly a celebration of the arts, the Sloane Collection features significant artwork with religious and spiritual iconography ranging from Asian to Russian to Spanish; and from ancient to 19th century.  The Hermitage Museum and Gardens invites emerging and professional artists to explore the concept of giving a contemporary voice to expressions of spiritual iconography.  All of us are influenced by religion, spirituality or mysticism in some way; how does it affect your work? What are your spiritual visions?

The Fine Art of Compassion

The Fine Art of Compassion, a Community Outreach Exhibition, is a multi-year project of The Tidewater Art Alliance for Visual Arts.  Unlike most partnerships between artists and charities where works of art are sold or auctioned to raise funds for the charity, the Fine Art of Compassion project raises awareness and understanding of the charity’s work in the community while providing an inspirational work of art to be kept and displayed by the non-profit as a lasting symbol of their good work. For 2010, the non-profit selected is the American Red Cross of Southeastern Virginia.

The project is a juried competition and exhibition of works of art. The artists who will participate in the Fine Art of Compassion will meet with volunteers and staff to learn about the work of the non-profit and gain insights into the compassion and commitment of the volunteers who serve the organization.  A representative from the non-profit will serve on the juror panel.

To learn more about the Fine Art of Compassion, contact Suzanne Watson at 757.620.4766 or suzanne@1eleven.org.
