Usually at this point in the blog I get all huffy and lovey about why something is so virtuous, enjoyable, and beneficial to society that we all just gotta support it.
I’m going to skip that and get straight to the facts:
When: This Friday, September 3rd. // 6 to 8pm.
Rain date: The following Saturday, Sept 11.
Where: Colley Ave., Ghent.
Note: We hope to do this once a month in a different neighborhood.
What: An unsanctioned-yet-lawful evening of music, dancing and performance on the sidewalks.
Why: I’m pretty sure anyone reading AltDaily wants to live in a place where street performance is prominent. The movement starts with us, playing, performing, and supporting.
Who: Anyone who shows up with an instrument, some movement, some lines prepared.
Price: It’s free, of course, but bring some dolla dolla bills. (If we want the performers to come back, we’ve got to make it worth their while.)
The rules: (1) Keep out of the way of pedestrian and traffic movement. Also, make doubly sure you’re not blocking the way/in out of any businesses.
(2) Do not be amplified. (The rules are more specific, but this is probably a safe way to generalize.)
(3) Vulgarities will get you, and us all, in trouble.
(4) Having a hat on the ground or open instrument case is cool, but asking for money crosses (what could be construed as) the begging line.
For more details, check this article.
Here is the Facebook event. Say you’re attending. Invite everyone.
This is the Facebook page for the movement itself.
(Sidenote: Isn’t it weird and awesome how, in the 21st Century, small-scale revolutions just take mouse clicks?)

Sorry if there’s a blasted commercial. Cover your ears and your eyes and wait until you feel the beauty.

ABOUT THE WRITER
Jesse is the editor in chief of AltDaily, and he's going to take this bio seriously, but not so seriously that he's going to continue in the third person. I've been involved with a bunch of local projects and civic groups in various roles, including: Hampton Roads, The Canvas; Art | Everywhere, Street Performance in Norfolk; Survive Norfolk; Hampton Roads Pride/Out in the Park; Bike Norfolk; re:Vision Norfolk, and such.
I originally came to Norfolk as a Perry Morgan fellow in ODU's creative writing program. Before that I bummed around quite a bit, writing stacks of books that never got published, hitchhiking, couchsurfing, riding the Greyhound up down and back across this country. Some of my favorite jobs and volunteer gigs have included working on organic farms in Ireland; being first mate on an old sail boat in Holland; working at a long-term home for young men in South Africa; being a journalist and high school teacher in New York and California; washing dishes in Yosemite National Park; teaching English in DC and swimming in Florida; and interning at ESPN in Bristol, which was much less cool that you'd want it to be. My career highlights have been having three of my op-eds run in the New York Times, and being the executive producer of a six-part docu-drama on BET. Because school is cool I have three master's degrees (ODU for MFA, NYU for magazine journalism, University of Connecticut for secondary English education). I live in Norfolk because I believe in its potential. Email your ideas or nicely couched criticism to jesse@altdaily.com.
