Here’s where we plan your weekend for you

Friday Night

Go see Jon Stewart at Chrysler Hall tonight at 7:30. I do believe that there are still $25 student seats available. If you think this guy is smart and funny on the television box, wait until you see him in person. I saw a live taping of The Daily Show once and I nearly passed out like I’d been struck by a case of the vapors.

Sidenote: Did you youngins know that during the first half of Jon Stewart’s career he was a nondescript average comedian whatever? Did you know he appeared in a Dave Chappelle movie called Half Baked? Do you want to see the trailer of that movie? (Stewart appears very briefly at about the two minute mark.)

Saturday

Hollywood and I at last fall's Stockley Gardens.

Hollywood and me at last fall's Stockley Gardens.

Spend your morning at the Stockley Gardens Fall Arts Festival. Not all the art is great, but you’ll find something worth hanging on your wall. But you don’t necessarily even go for the art; you go for the vibe and the cause, Hope House. Make sure to stop by and say Hey to my girl Hollywood, who is trying to raise money to take a trip to–where else–Hollywood.

The Festival runs Saturday 10- 5 and Sunday noon- 5 in Stockley Garden Park in Ghent.

At night try to get tickets to Evil Dead: The Musical at the Generic Theater downtown. It’s really funny and fun, and will get you all sorts of hyped up for Halloween. Go here for my feature on the show. Warning: if you sit in the first few rows, you will get wet (with blood). Sick and awesome, right?

Sunday

Speaking of blood, after you get splashed by it on Saturday night, and take a sip of the Lord’s on Sunday morning, may as well get yourself a taste of grape blood (this sentence should have ended a long time ago, I know) on Sunday afternoon at the Fall Wine Fest at Town Point Park. More than 30 Virginia wineries will be there. Picnics and lawn chairs are encouraged. It takes place both Saturday and Sunday from 11- 6. (FYI: Got to buy a ticket.)

And on Sunday night, go do your soul a favor and see Where The Wild Things Are. (Click here to read Hannah’s review.) If you watch this trailer and don’t want to see this movie, I swear to God…

My point is, just about everyone I know complains about living here. But if you actually go out there and be a part of the cool shit happening, you might actually like it here. Which means you’re stuck having to be happy, which requires a lot more effort, but it’s probably worth it. Maybe. Lying around kvetching is hella relaxing too.

See you around.

ABOUT THE WRITER
Jesse is the editor in chief of AltDaily, and he's going to take this bio seriously, but not so seriously that he's going to continue in the third person. I've been involved with a bunch of local projects and civic groups in various roles, including: Hampton Roads, The Canvas; Art | Everywhere, Street Performance in Norfolk; Survive Norfolk; Hampton Roads Pride/Out in the Park; Bike Norfolk; re:Vision Norfolk, and such. I originally came to Norfolk as a Perry Morgan fellow in ODU's creative writing program. Before that I bummed around quite a bit, writing stacks of books that never got published, hitchhiking, couchsurfing, riding the Greyhound up down and back across this country. Some of my favorite jobs and volunteer gigs have included working on organic farms in Ireland; being first mate on an old sail boat in Holland; working at a long-term home for young men in South Africa; being a journalist and high school teacher in New York and California; washing dishes in Yosemite National Park; teaching English in DC and swimming in Florida; and interning at ESPN in Bristol, which was much less cool that you'd want it to be. My career highlights have been having three of my op-eds run in the New York Times, and being the executive producer of a six-part docu-drama on BET. Because school is cool I have three master's degrees (ODU for MFA, NYU for magazine journalism, University of Connecticut for secondary English education). I live in Norfolk because I believe in its potential. Email your ideas or nicely couched criticism to jesse@altdaily.com.
